Hleb 'to leave Arsenal'

Alexander Hleb's agent claims the player will leave Arsenal this summer.

The Belarus midfielder has been linked with a move to Inter Milan, who have expressed an interest in the 27-year-old.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has already had to cope with midfielder Mathieu Flamini agreeing to join AC Milan when his Arsenal contract expires at the end of June, and now Hleb's agent Nikolai Shpilevski claims his client will also be going at the end of the season.

He told Belarussian paper Pressball: 'Alexander is preparing to make the most important moves of his life.

'He is leaving Arsenal even though they want to offer him a new long-term contract and better conditions. Only time will tell if leaving is the right decision, but there's no way back now. Everything will be cleared up in the next two weeks.'

Hleb joined Arsenal from German club Stuttgart in the summer of 2005 and has so far made 89 league appearances, scoring seven goals.

Jol set to replace departing Stevens at Hamburg

Former Tottenham boss Martin Jol has emerged as Hamburg's first choice to replace Huub Stevens as coach.

The club's board of directors are due to meet on Tuesday to discuss the details of an offer made to Jol, club chairman Horst Becker has told the Welt newspaper.

If the deal is approved, Jol could be named as Stevens' successor on Wednesday, just days before the end of the current Bundesliga season.

Stevens will leave the club this summer to take over at PSV Eindhoven and HSV have been on the lookout for a new coach since his announcement last December.

Rijkaard to leave Barca in summer, says colleague

MADRID, May 1 (Reuters) - Frank Rijkaard will leave Barcelona at the end of the season, a close colleague of the Dutch coach said on Thursday.

Jil van Eyle, who works with Rijkaard in a fundraising initiative known as 'teaming', said he was looking for another sponsor because of his imminent departure from the club.

'I work for Frank Rijkaard who has given me a lot of time to work on 'teaming' but as Frank will be leaving FC Barcelona in a few weeks my work with him will come to an end,' Van Eyle said on his webpage (http://blog.teaming.info/) on Thursday.

'He said he will always support me with his name and image, but logically I will now have to look for another sponsor....'

Rijkaard took charge at Barcelona in 2003 and led the team to back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006 and victory in the Champions League, but the team have failed to win any further trophies in the past two seasons.

Local media have taken it for granted that Rijkaard, who is under contract until 2009, will leave the club at the end of the season with ex-Barcelona player Pep Guardiola and former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho among the names linked with the post.

Barca had no official comment on Rijkaard's future.

What Is Football?

Football is the name given to a number of different team sports, all of which involve (to varying degrees) kicking a ball with the foot in an attempt to score a goal. The most popular of these sports world-wide is association football, also known as soccer and most commonly just football.

The English language word "football" is also applied to gridiron football (which includes American football and Canadian football), Australian rules football, Gaelic football, rugby football (rugby league and rugby union), and related games. Each of these codes (specific sets of rules, or the games defined by them) is referred to as "football".

These games involve:
  • two teams of between 11 and 18 players
  • kicking a spherical or prolate spheroid ball (which is itself called a football) with the foot;
  • a clearly defined area in which to keep the ball;
  • scoring goals and/or points, by moving the ball to an opposing team's end of the field and either into a goal area, or over a line;
  • the goal and/or line being defended by the opposing team;
  • players being required to move the ball—depending on the code—by kicking, carrying and/or hand passing the ball;
  • goals and/or points resulting from players putting the ball between two goalposts and;
  • penalties imposed for causing the ball to leave the area of play, or excessive contact with the opposing team.

In most codes, there are rules restricting the movement of players offside and players scoring a goal must put the ball either under or over a crossbar between the goalposts. Other features common to several football codes include: points being mostly scored by players carrying the ball across the goal line and; players receiving a free kick after they take a mark/make a fair catch.

Peoples from around the world have played games which involved kicking and/or carrying a ball, since ancient times. However, most of the modern codes of football have their origins in Europe.
